In a letter to his brother Anatoly, Tchaikovsky wrote: “I am completely preoccupied with the new work and find it difficult to tear myself away from it. I believe it will be one of my best. I must finish it as soon as possible.” And he was right – it is a true symphonic masterpiece.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Finnish maestro Jukka-Pekka Saraste, whose exceptional versatility has brought him great acclaim on the international stage. Since 2023, he has served as Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and he has also had a close relationship with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic for many decades.
Alongside Tchaikovsky’s classic, we hear another milestone in the repertoire: Edward Elgar’s richly expressive Cello Concerto – a deeply heartfelt work, full of melancholy and longing. The soloist is acclaimed German cellist Alban Gerhardt, renowned for his profound musicality and artistic curiosity. He performs with the world’s leading orchestras and made his debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in 2013.
The concert opens with Midnight Sun Variations by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen – a poetic evocation of the magical Arctic summer night, when the light never fades.

Holmer is without doubt one of Sweden’s most prominent young conductors, also making his mark internationally.
Now he returns to the podium, joined by acclaimed German violinist Arabella Steinbacher – renowned for her rich tone and effortless virtuosity. She made her Konserthuset debut in 2012, and during her most recent visit in 2024, she performed Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto. This time, the programme features Mozart’s majestic and powerful Violin Concerto No. 5.
Schubert was in his early twenties when he composed his Sixth Symphony. It is often referred to as the “Little C major” to distinguish it from the “Great C major” Symphony No. 9 – a label that hardly does it justice. This is jubilant music full of youthful vitality. The beautiful melody in the second movement was later used by the beloved Swedish comedy duo Hasse and Tage in their revue Spader Madame! – where it became Donna Juanita, sung by Monica Zetterlund.
Tebogo Monnakgotla is the 2025–26 Season Composer at Konserthuset Stockholm. One of Sweden’s most celebrated composers, she is represented here with The Robin – music inspired by the song of the European robin and Selma Lagerlöf’s fairytale bird Rödbröst (Redbreast).

He described it as a tribute to “the generosity, strength and spiritual purity of the free and happy man.” For Prokofiev personally, it was a time of great creativity – but perhaps he sensed what lay ahead for his homeland, the Soviet Union. The symphony’s playful, fast-paced movements are set in stark contrast to the slow third movement, steeped in unease and anxiety. After the war ended, tensions between East and West escalated, and the Cold War soon took hold.
Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in this symphony, one of Prokofiev’s most beloved and frequently performed works.
The concert opens with a new piece by Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg: a concerto for viola and orchestra, featuring Lawrence Power as soloist – one of the world’s leading violists. The work received its world premiere in Helsinki in 2024.
The viola is not a typical solo instrument, but it offers a wealth of expressive possibilities – something Lindberg has explored to the full. Scored for a slightly smaller orchestra, “Mozart-sized”, the concerto was written with the soloist in mind: “The concerto is dedicated to Lawrence Power. He’s a musician I truly admire,” says Magnus Lindberg, who, together with Kaija Saariaho, was featured in the 2002 Composer Festival at Konserthuset.

The soloist is Japanese pianist Mao Fujita, making his debut at Konserthuset Stockholm together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.
Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft has previously worked with Mao Fujita:

He has gone back to the source – to the score – rather than relying on interpretative traditions and mannerisms.”Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto is paired with a modern Swedish classic: Allan Pettersson’s Symphony No. 7. Pettersson composed from life itself – “the damned, the blessed,” as he put it.
The Seventh Symphony is as harrowing as it is beautiful, filled with both dark shadows and music of tender consolation. A few quietly repeated chords return throughout – at times ominous, at times like a caress. The symphony was premiered in 1968 by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Antal Dorati, and has remained a recurring presence in the orchestra’s repertoire ever since.

Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft has conducted several of Hillborg’s works, but this is the first time he takes on Beast Sampler.
In this piece, Hillborg focuses more on sound itself than on traditionally structured tones. “I often refer to the orchestra as a sound beast” he has said. The title Beast Sampler plays on the word “beast” and the idea of sampling – borrowing elements from earlier works to create something entirely new.
German-born violinist Clara-Jumi Kang made her debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2021. She has won numerous prestigious awards and performs with orchestras all over the world. This season, she appears with the orchestra on three occasions – in Shostakovich’s First Violin Concerto, here in Édouard Lalo’s virtuosic Violin Concerto, and later in Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade. Lalo’s work is titled Symphonie espagnole due to its strong Spanish influence and melodic flair.
In his First Symphony, Gustav Mahler takes the listener both out into the natural world and deep into the painful recesses of the human experience. With remarkable brilliance, he portrays human complexity and restlessness. His inspirations included the German Romantic author Jean Paul’s novel Titan, which gave the symphony its original subtitle, and above all the folk poetry collection Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Youth’s Magic Horn), which deeply moved Mahler.

The inspiration came from seeing sixteen swans in flight – a moment that gave rise to the magnificent theme of the symphony’s final movement. “One of the great experiences of my life! My God, what beauty.”
We now experience Sibelius’ most performed and beloved symphony with the visiting Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Pekka Kuusisto – the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor. Known for his imaginative and surprising programming, Kuusisto has invited singer Katarina Barruk to join this concert. A few years ago, she released her second album, Ruhttuo.
Her evocative songs, sung in Ume Sámi – her mother tongue – are here given a magnificent symphonic setting. “I write all my music in the world’s most beautiful language, Ume Sámi. For me, it’s not a choice. I’m not doing it to make a point – it’s about being myself. Writing music in Ume Sámi is my way of inviting friends and audiences into my universe,” says Katarina Barruk.

This ballet score portrays a pioneer community in the early 1900s, following a young man as he marries and settles down to build a home.
Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft: “It’s probably one of the pieces I’ve conducted the most in my life. And I’ve even danced in the ballet – I played the Evangelist. Most people perform the suite in concert, but I prefer the complete score, which has a clearer arc. It’s a work written during wartime, but that’s not reflected in the suite – the 11-minute battle scene is omitted. Is it a literal battle or one taking place inside someone’s mind? There’s a surreal quality to it that’s quite exciting.”
The concert opens with Jesper Nordin’s Convergence for solo violin, orchestra, live electronics and live visuals – created in collaboration with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the phenomenal violinist Pekka Kuusisto, who also performs as soloist. The work is the result of their shared fascination with different artistic expressions and musical genres. Convergence was premiered in San Francisco in 2023 and is a co-commission by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and the San Francisco Symphony.
Between Convergence and Appalachian Spring, we hear the rhapsody Midvintera by Wilhelm Stenhammar – a depiction of a snow-covered Nordic landscape. This romantically evocative work, with touches of Swedish folk melody, hasn’t been performed at Konserthuset Stockholm since the 1950s.

Perhaps the most frequently performed work in the classical repertoire. This is music that defies indifference, seemingly telling a story of a journey from darkness to light, of a struggle that leads to triumph. More than any other work, the “Fifth” embodies the Beethoven myth: the solitary figure confronting fate, fighting, and ultimately claiming his freedom. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by young Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen, who has been described as an exceptional talent.
Ava Bahari is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed violinists today. She last appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in 2022, and we are delighted to welcome her back. This time, she performs Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz’s Violin Concerto No. 4. Bacewicz, a top-level violinist herself, wrote no fewer than seven (!) virtuosic violin concertos. The fourth has everything one could wish for – fiery brilliance, imaginative melodies and playful rhythms.
The concert opens with music by Konserthuset Stockholm’s Composer-in-Residence, Tebogo Monnakgotla. Described as a “Debussy for the 21st century,” her music has gained international attention. Her elegant light years away – Supernova! radiates a breathtaking cosmic atmosphere. The work was composed for and premiered by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013.
