This year marks the 200th anniversary of his birth – celebrated with a concert brimming with sparkling waltzes and whirling polkas.
But Johann Strauss II was not alone in putting the waltz on the map. The programme also features works by other masters of the genre – including Franz Lehár and Franz von Suppè. Making her Konserthuset debut is internationally acclaimed American soprano Emily Pogorelc, performing operetta gems. A golden age in Vienna comes to life – almost like a Viennese New Year’s concert in the autumn darkness.
Frivolous and superficial? Not quite – this music demands great care and finesse to truly soar. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by a connoisseur of the genre: Austrian conductor Manfred Honeck, who grew up with these Viennese delicacies. His early years as a violist with the Vienna Philharmonic have deeply influenced his work as a conductor and his ability to uncover the music’s deeper layers.

He brings the music into the sharpest possible focus – without ever losing its magic. He often appears as both conductor and soloist, as in this concert, which features Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 23 – one of his most frequently performed and beloved works.
It is framed by Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 5, one of six concertos composed for Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg-Schwedt – and a true masterpiece of the Baroque era. It is a concerto grosso, characterised by a small group of soloists set against the full ensemble. In this case, flute, violin and harpsichord/piano take centre stage – and in the beautiful, atmospheric second movement, they perform alone, without the orchestra. These roles are taken by Royal Stockholm Philharmonic members: flautist Andreas Alin and concertmaster Andrej Power.
The concert concludes with Robert Schumann’s Symphony No. 1, the “Spring” Symphony – music written during a joyful period in Schumann’s life. He had just married Clara, his great passion and lifelong companion. Fittingly, the symphony opens with a resounding trumpet fanfare, and throughout, it is radiant, heartfelt and full of vitality.

He has graced the stage at Konserthuset Stockholm many times before, and is always a warmly welcomed guest. On this occasion, he performs the stunning Violin Concerto by Swiss composer Frank Martin – a work brimming with lyrical beauty, vivid orchestral colours and rhythmic vitality.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest in the Netherlands and Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. The concert opens with music by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, a highly successful figure in her time whose place in the repertoire is now firmly established. “I was obsessed with the idea of letting notes swell and then return to their original state,” she said of her shimmering Pensieri notturni – “night thoughts”.
When Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy undertook the grand tour expected of well-to-do young men of the era, he travelled to Scotland. The impression made by the wild beauty of the Highlands left a lasting mark, reflected in his Third Symphony – a work that vividly captures the Scottish atmosphere. The symphony is often referred to as the Scottish.

It’s lyrical and powerful – comparable to Elgar’s Cello Concerto or Grieg’s Piano Concerto. It showcases the instrument’s full range,” says Jakob Nilsson.
The orchestra is conducted by Christian Lindberg, himself one of the world’s foremost trombonists. As a conductor, he has also delved deeply into the music of Allan Pettersson. Here, together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, he takes on the grand and evocative Symphony No. 8 – a close sibling to the widely loved Symphony No. 7.
The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture – a musical interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic love story, full of passion and longing. Many will recognise the famous love theme, heard several times throughout the piece and often used in film.

Rachmaninoff’s concerto is filled with passion, longing and romance, but also serenity and peace. For the first time at Konserthuset Stockholm, we welcome the extraordinary Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan – a giant among giants.
Dvořák’s New World Symphony, written during his years as a composition professor in the United States, has become one of the most frequently performed and cherished symphonic works in the world. In it, Dvořák masterfully combines the musical roots of his beloved Bohemia with influences from Native American melodies and spirituals.
The concert opens with music by the fascinating Hungarian-Croatian composer Dora Pejačević. We hear her richly late-Romantic Overture for Large Orchestra, in which she paints vibrant, shimmering harmonies with broad, expressive strokes. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Austrian conductor Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.
