About the series

Magic with a lone pianist on the grand stage – raw, sensitive, powerful and deeply engaging. The brightest stars of the international piano world come to Konserthuset, this time including three exciting debutants and two familiar faces. Alongside Grigory Sokolov – a returning favourite each season – and the esteemed French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard, we welcome rising stars Yeol Eum Son from South Korea, Giorgi Gigashvili from Georgia (one of this season’s ECHO Rising Stars), and Chinese-American pianist Zee Zee.

With few exceptions, he has appeared here every autumn since 2004. He never fails to amaze audiences with his astonishing technical brilliance and exceptional ability to elevate music to extraordinary heights.
At his most recent concert, Sokolov offered the audience a chance to compare Robert Schumann and Frédéric Chopin – two Romantic geniuses born in the same year, 1810, both deeply focused on the piano. The programme also included music by William Byrd, one of England’s most significant Renaissance composers, active during the Elizabethan era. To the audience’s delight, Sokolov returned for no fewer than six encores!
Sokolov often finalises his repertoire only shortly before each performance. So while we do not yet know what he will play at his upcoming concert, we can be certain that whatever he chooses, he will once again astonish us with his extraordinary ability to reveal new dimensions in the music.

A kind of magic. South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son is among this select group. Her playing is marked by a rare poetic elegance, combined with power and a bold sense of drama.
In this recital, she performs Rachmaninov’s often dazzlingly virtuosic Preludes, Op. 32 – inspired by Frédéric Chopin’s celebrated preludes, where each piece seems to unfold from a single musical idea. Composed in the autumn of 1910, the preludes share stylistic traits with his magnificent Third Piano Concerto, completed just shortly beforehand.
The ever-curious Yeol Eum Son also presents a fascinating set of works by legendary pianists who were also composers. Among them are the stylish Minuet by Polish pianist Ignaz Paderewski, Alicia de Larrocha’s Sonata Antigua – imbued with the spirit of early Italian Baroque – and excerpts from Friedrich Gulda’s Play Piano Play, a playful cycle written for his wife.

A major turning point came in 2019 when he won the prestigious Vigo International Piano Competition – with legendary pianist Martha Argerich as jury chair. He was a BBC New Generation Artist 2023–25 and is now nominated for ECHO Rising Stars.
Gigashvili was born in Tbilisi and won his first music competition at the age of thirteen. He went on to study at the Zakaria Paliashvili Music School for Gifted Children, followed by piano studies at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire with the renowned teacher and pianist Revaz Tavadze.
Now making his debut at Konserthuset Stockholm, he presents a programme including Shostakovich’s Second Piano Sonata, Lili Boulanger’s evocative D’un vieux jardin (“From an old garden”), Chopin’s magnificent Fourth and final Ballade, and one of Ravel’s most beloved piano works – the suite Miroirs (“Mirrors”). The concert concludes with Galina Ustvolskaya’s (1919–2006) brutally expressive Piano Sonata No. 6.
Rising Stars is a unique and forward-looking collaboration between 23 of Europe’s leading concert halls, all part of ECHO – the European Concert Hall Organisation. Each year, a select group of young artists and ensembles from across Europe are given the opportunity to tour all of the venues and perform for international audiences. Time and again, the artists chosen for Rising Stars go on to enjoy internationally successful careers.
Giorgi Gigashvili is nominated for ECHO Rising Stars by Konzerthaus Dortmund, Kölner Philharmonie, Philharmonie Luxembourg and the Polish Radio National Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

As a master of transcribing music for the piano – whether originally written for other instruments or voice – he went on to create exquisitely sensitive arrangements of many of Schubert’s lieder.
In this recital by acclaimed Chinese-American pianist Zee Zee, the programme revolves around Schubert and Liszt. We hear some of Schubert’s most beautiful songs in Liszt’s delicate arrangements, as well as the first of Schubert’s final three piano sonatas – a profoundly moving masterpiece in which the composer seems to reflect on the life he has lived.
With his extraordinary virtuosity, Liszt was the great piano lion of the 19th century – taking piano playing to entirely new levels. As a composer, he also constantly explored the expressive possibilities of music. Art and literature were key sources of inspiration, and his three suites Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage) are closely linked to Goethe’s novel Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship, about a young merchant’s spiritual and artistic journey.
Here, Zee Zee performs three pieces from Années de pèlerinage: Vallée d’Obermann, set in the Swiss Alps; Les jeux d’eau à la Villa d’Este, in which Liszt describes the fountains and lush gardens of the Villa d’Este near Rome; and the dazzlingly virtuosic Tarantella.
