In a letter to his brother Anatoly, Tchaikovsky wrote: “I am completely preoccupied with the new work and find it difficult to tear myself away from it. I believe it will be one of my best. I must finish it as soon as possible.” And he was right – it is a true symphonic masterpiece.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Finnish maestro Jukka-Pekka Saraste, whose exceptional versatility has brought him great acclaim on the international stage. Since 2023, he has served as Chief Conductor of the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, and he has also had a close relationship with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic for many decades.
Alongside Tchaikovsky’s classic, we hear another milestone in the repertoire: Edward Elgar’s richly expressive Cello Concerto – a deeply heartfelt work, full of melancholy and longing. The soloist is acclaimed German cellist Alban Gerhardt, renowned for his profound musicality and artistic curiosity. He performs with the world’s leading orchestras and made his debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in 2013.
The concert opens with Midnight Sun Variations by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen – a poetic evocation of the magical Arctic summer night, when the light never fades.

Born in Germany and of South Korean heritage, she was recognised as a prodigy at an early age. Both her parents are professional singers, and she began playing the violin at the age of three. At just four, she became the youngest student ever admitted to the Mannheim University of Music.
Clara-Jumi Kang last appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2022, and now she returns as soloist in Shostakovich’s remarkable Violin Concerto No. 1 – a work of profound gravity combined with breathtaking beauty. Shostakovich also reveals his wonderfully sarcastic side here – as if thumbing his nose at Stalin’s cultural enforcers.
The concert also features Shostakovich’s Fifteenth Symphony – his final symphony. While not technically demanding, it remains one of his most enigmatic compositions. In the playful first movement, we hear the famous William Tell theme from Rossini’s opera, but beneath the surface lies a skewed and unpredictable world. Shostakovich also quotes Wagner and some of his own earlier works. He knew his time was running out – and perhaps in this last symphony, we hear a Soviet artist’s life flashing before our ears.

It was between 2007 and 2012 that he composed the trilogy A cycle of the North. The first work, Fastlandet – The Mainland, premiered at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, was a commission related to a Sibelius theme. In The Mainland, the cor anglais quotes a few notes from The Swan of Tuonela by Sibelius. Like Sibelius, Torstensson had witnessed the beautiful sight of swans in flight, near his cottage in Småland. In addition to the swan motif, we also hear the sound of thin birch twigs snapping.
Himmelen – The Heaven – was co-commissioned by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and premiered at Konserthuset in 2015, conducted by Sakari Oramo. The work is inspired by three visual artworks from different eras: Anselm Kiefer’s monumental Am Anfang, Gustave Doré’s Jacob’s Ladder – illustrating the dream of Jacob from Genesis 28 – and William Blake’s Jacob’s Ladder. Could the final music box-like passage suggest a glimpse of heavenly peace?
Between The Mainland and The Heaven, we hear the festival’s earliest work, also rich with references to nature. und eine Springflut... (“and a spring tide…”) from 1974 was composed by a 23-year-old Torstensson. The title comes from the text of Arnold Schoenberg’s Pierrot lunaire: “And a spring tide flooded the quiet horizon…” There are passages in the music, Torstensson says, that overflow with notes – like a spring tide.
The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra appears as guest under the baton of Fredrik Burstedt. The concert opens with Charles Ives’s evocative The Unanswered Question – a piece that fascinated the young Klas Torstensson.
Volcanic forces, but also the most tender and heartbreakingly emotional music – Klas Torstensson moves between extremes. Born in Sweden but long based in the Netherlands, he is a composer with significant international reach. This year’s Composer Festival focuses primarily on his work from the past two decades, but also includes music from the early 1970s, making the festival a wide-ranging retrospective.

He described it as a tribute to “the generosity, strength and spiritual purity of the free and happy man.” For Prokofiev personally, it was a time of great creativity – but perhaps he sensed what lay ahead for his homeland, the Soviet Union. The symphony’s playful, fast-paced movements are set in stark contrast to the slow third movement, steeped in unease and anxiety. After the war ended, tensions between East and West escalated, and the Cold War soon took hold.
Chief Conductor Ryan Bancroft leads the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in this symphony, one of Prokofiev’s most beloved and frequently performed works.
The concert opens with a new piece by Finnish composer Magnus Lindberg: a concerto for viola and orchestra, featuring Lawrence Power as soloist – one of the world’s leading violists. The work received its world premiere in Helsinki in 2024.
The viola is not a typical solo instrument, but it offers a wealth of expressive possibilities – something Lindberg has explored to the full. Scored for a slightly smaller orchestra, “Mozart-sized”, the concerto was written with the soloist in mind: “The concerto is dedicated to Lawrence Power. He’s a musician I truly admire,” says Magnus Lindberg, who, together with Kaija Saariaho, was featured in the 2002 Composer Festival at Konserthuset.

He has graced the stage at Konserthuset Stockholm many times before, and is always a warmly welcomed guest. On this occasion, he performs the stunning Violin Concerto by Swiss composer Frank Martin – a work brimming with lyrical beauty, vivid orchestral colours and rhythmic vitality.
The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, Chief Conductor of the Residentie Orkest in the Netherlands and Principal Guest Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic. The concert opens with music by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, a highly successful figure in her time whose place in the repertoire is now firmly established. “I was obsessed with the idea of letting notes swell and then return to their original state,” she said of her shimmering Pensieri notturni – “night thoughts”.
When Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy undertook the grand tour expected of well-to-do young men of the era, he travelled to Scotland. The impression made by the wild beauty of the Highlands left a lasting mark, reflected in his Third Symphony – a work that vividly captures the Scottish atmosphere. The symphony is often referred to as the Scottish.

It’s lyrical and powerful – comparable to Elgar’s Cello Concerto or Grieg’s Piano Concerto. It showcases the instrument’s full range,” says Jakob Nilsson.
The orchestra is conducted by Christian Lindberg, himself one of the world’s foremost trombonists. As a conductor, he has also delved deeply into the music of Allan Pettersson. Here, together with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra, he takes on the grand and evocative Symphony No. 8 – a close sibling to the widely loved Symphony No. 7.
The concert opens with Tchaikovsky’s Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture – a musical interpretation of Shakespeare’s tragic love story, full of passion and longing. Many will recognise the famous love theme, heard several times throughout the piece and often used in film.

Born in Germany and of South Korean heritage, Clara-Jumi Kang was recognised early on as a prodigy. She began playing the violin at the age of three and was admitted to the Mannheim University of Music at four – the youngest student ever in the institution’s history.
This time, we hear Clara-Jumi Kang in Leonard Bernstein’s Serenade for violin, strings, harp and percussion, composed in 1954. It is a colourful work inspired by Plato’s Symposium, with each movement reflecting one of the philosophical speakers in the dialogue. Bernstein blends neoclassical clarity with jazz-inflected vitality. The Serenade is one of his most personal compositions and a central work in the violin repertoire – essentially a violin concerto in disguise.
Hector Berlioz’s Symphonie fantastique is a work ablaze with energy, passion and feverish desire. It tells the story of a young, sensitive musician who, in despair, poisons himself with opium. The object of his love becomes a recurring melody – an idée fixe – that haunts him throughout the symphony.

Rachmaninoff’s concerto is filled with passion, longing and romance, but also serenity and peace. For the first time at Konserthuset Stockholm, we welcome the extraordinary Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan – a giant among giants.
Dvořák’s New World Symphony, written during his years as a composition professor in the United States, has become one of the most frequently performed and cherished symphonic works in the world. In it, Dvořák masterfully combines the musical roots of his beloved Bohemia with influences from Native American melodies and spirituals.
The concert opens with music by the fascinating Hungarian-Croatian composer Dora Pejačević. We hear her richly late-Romantic Overture for Large Orchestra, in which she paints vibrant, shimmering harmonies with broad, expressive strokes. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is conducted by Austrian conductor Emmanuel Tjeknavorian.

Perhaps the most frequently performed work in the classical repertoire. This is music that defies indifference, seemingly telling a story of a journey from darkness to light, of a struggle that leads to triumph. More than any other work, the “Fifth” embodies the Beethoven myth: the solitary figure confronting fate, fighting, and ultimately claiming his freedom. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra is led by young Finnish conductor Kristian Sallinen, who has been described as an exceptional talent.
Ava Bahari is one of Sweden’s most acclaimed violinists today. She last appeared with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in 2022, and we are delighted to welcome her back. This time, she performs Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz’s Violin Concerto No. 4. Bacewicz, a top-level violinist herself, wrote no fewer than seven (!) virtuosic violin concertos. The fourth has everything one could wish for – fiery brilliance, imaginative melodies and playful rhythms.
The concert opens with music by Konserthuset Stockholm’s Composer-in-Residence, Tebogo Monnakgotla. Described as a “Debussy for the 21st century,” her music has gained international attention. Her elegant light years away – Supernova! radiates a breathtaking cosmic atmosphere. The work was composed for and premiered by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra in 2013.
